Community Supported Yoga

Born out of the tragedy of Tropical Storm Irene that flooded our community on August 28, 2011, IndyYoga came to life from a unique collaboration of family, friends, yoga students and the community-at-large.

The studio where I had taught for the last four years was flooded and we had to abandon the building.  Since then, our yoga classes have been held in temporary venues not always ideal for yoga and meditation.

Next to my home on Rt.100 in Duxbury, VT I have a commercial building with ample room for a studio.  I personally did not have the funds to renovate it and decided to utilize a community supported business model.  Much like the "CSA" shares of Community Supported Agriculture, I reached out to students to pay forward on their future yoga classes as a way to raise some capital. Fifty people joined "The Yoga Mat Club" for which they receive a logo mat and their own cubby, plus discounts on classes and workshops.  The Yoga Mat club raised over $15,000 in 6 weeks.

Along with three small low interest loans from friends and family, community artisans who bartered for classes or agreed to a reduced price for their services, and many volunteers, our community now has a calm and inviting space for yoga practice and meditation.  With beautiful views of Mount Hunger, it is in easy driving distance from Waterbury as well the Mad River Valley.
